Certificat - Compétence linguistique en français langue seconde / Certificate - French Language Proficiency

This ten-course, 450-hour program will lead to a Certificate in French Language Proficiency from La Cité collégiale. This program is intended for adult students who wish to learn French as a Second Language. The students will start the program at the level determined by their placement test results and will continue through the progressive levels of language acquisition. The program is designed to help the students develop their skills in four areas:

reading, writing, speaking and listening. Furthermore, this ten-course program is based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), the national standard for describing, measuring and recognizing second language proficiency. The academic structure of the program is geared toward accomplishing eight (8) out of the twelve (12) Benchmark levels through a set of tasks defined by the CLB within the four language skills, listed above.

At the end of the program, the student will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively orally and in writing in a variety of contexts, especially in everyday, academic and work-related situations.
  2. Obtain, provide and exchange information in a clear, effective manner.
  3. Use appropriate language (grammar, vocabulary, syntax and
    pronunciation) in order to persuade, discuss and convince both orally
    and in writing.
  4. Present a personal and a professional opinion or point of view to an audience.
  5. Listen, interpret and summarize both orally and in writing a variety of written and oral information.
  6. Use correctly language structures according to the rules of French grammar and syntax when communicating orally or in writing.
  7. Use reference tools effectively.

  • French as a Second Language – Level III 45
  • French as a Second Language – Level IV 45
  • French as a Second Language – Level V 45
  • French as a Second Language – Level VI 45
  • French as a Second Language – Level VII
  • 45 French as a Second Language – Level VIII 45

Electives (choose 2 courses among the following) Hours

  • French for the Workplace I – Level III 45
  • French for the Workplace II – Level V 45
  • Conversational French Elementary – Level II 45
  • Conversational French Intermediate – Level IV 45
  • Conversational French Advanced – Level VI 45
  • Conversational French Enriched – Level VII 45 Or other recommended course approved by the Program Coordinator

    Ensure that you have completed a minimum of five French as a Second Language courses at La Cité collégiale in order to apply for the Certificate in French Language Profiency.
